How to Find Government Home Repair Grants

Does your home need a little TLC?  Home repairs can be quite expensive and often times we put them off to utilize funds for more immediate needs.  The problem with this is that the issue can grow into an even bigger fix and cause more damage.  Unfortunately, many families do not have the funds to take care of home improvements or repairs as they come up.  For this reason, the government offers qualifying individuals Home Repair Grants.  These are gifted funds to be used for your home repairs and improvements that never have to be paid back.  Also available are Home Improvement Loan Programs that make it easier for low-income families to afford home improvements.

United States Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

  • Single Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants allow low-income families to make repairs, improvements and remove health and safety hazards. This program can greatly benefit those who are financially strapped.  Individuals can qualify for up to a $20,000 loan and a $7,000 grant.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

  • Home Improvement Loans that range from property improvement loans to home improvement assistance for specific demographics.  Minorities, senior citizens, women, single-parent homes, veterans, people with disabilities, and financially disadvantaged people can all receive special opportunities for home grants. Learn about the HUD Title 1 Property Improvement Loan and several other loans and incentive options or contact your state Department of Housing and Urban Development office for programs in your community.

Federal Emergency Management Agency

  • The government agency devoted to helping people before, during and after disasters.  If your home was damaged in a disaster you may qualify for Disaster Home Assistance. Financial grants from FEMA can be used for repairs such as structural damage to utility or septic system fixes.  This type of support helps individuals rebuild after major catastrophes.

With a little bit of research, you can find the assistance you need to have your home repaired, or at least to cover some of the cost of the repairs.  Review the home grants available and select those that best suit your needs.  It’s possible you may have to apply for a number of different grants before you receive one, as there are limited funds available.  Don’t let this discourage you, with persistence and determination you can find the help you need.
